Miriam Bellamy, LMFT

Miriam Bellamy

As a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist, Miriam has been propelled, for nearly 25 years, by an insatiable curiosity about relationships. What she has learned, in all her studies, and in all her research and practice with hundreds of families, is that staying in the search, continuing to ask hard questions, and being willing to open up about what we are learning and where we’re stuck (or not) are all essential to living life well.

She has focused her professional life on the art and science of marriage counseling, sex therapy, and infidelity counseling using unconventional yet common sense approaches. Her approach is based in Bowen Family Systems Theory, the work of Karla McLaren and The Language of Emotions, and Miriam’s own upcoming book, The Trust Trap®. Miriam has been in practice for almost 25 years. She is licensed in both Georgia and Colorado and now resides in Colorado.

Kelly Matthews LCSW

Kelly Matthews

Hi, my name is Kelly Matthews LCSW

After more than 20 years of working as a clinical social worker, I continue to be excited to work with individuals, couples and families. I see most of life’s difficulties stemming from anxiety and stress. If one is interested in addressing an issue(s), the most thoughtful way of doing that is to understand one’s response to stress and anxiety (which are always woven into issues). Life is unpredictable and constantly changing. If we focus on how we respond to it, we will be better able to successfully work on the challenge. I enjoy working with people to look at the problems at hand, learn about attempts to deal with it and then discover better, more successful solutions.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from Mundelein College. I completed my Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1996 and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 1998. I have worked in child welfare, in-patient psychiatric and private practice settings. I completed a post-graduate training program in Bowen Family Systems Theory in 2005 and have been on the faculty since 2011.

Lisa Friedstein, Bowen Family Systems Coach

Lisa Friedstein

Hi. My name is Lisa Friedstein (pronounced “Freed Steen”).

I have been studying, practicing, and participating in Bowen Family Systems Theory for the last 15 years. I started working with a coach individually which led me to enrolling in 2009 in the post-graduate training program at the Center for Family Consultation in Evanston, Illinois, where I completed 3 years of training. I continued my training at the Bowen Center in Georgetown and recently completed a 3 year program. I have had a private practice since 2012 where I offer coaching in Bowen Family Systems Theory, both in person and online to couples and individuals, and I am now a faculty member at the Center for Family Consultation in Illinois.

Murray Bowen MD was a psychiatrist, trained in Psychodynamic Theory in the 1940’s and early 1950’s. Bowen was from a large family who owned a funeral home in Tennessee and was keenly aware of the connection between man and nature.

He began developing his theory while working at the Menninger Clinic in Kansas and then created a five year research project at the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland where he studied and observed families who had an adult schizophrenic child. From these observations and his study of the natural sciences such as, biology, anthropology, psychology and evolution, Bowen “…began developing a natural systems theory about the biological basis of human relationships.” (J.Bowen, 2013)

Murray Bowen’s departure from mainstream thinking is what set him apart from traditional family therapy. Seeing the family as an emotional system provided a different way to understand families. His hopes were that human behavior could be studied and understood objectively and thus, scientifically.

A little about me:

I was raised in the Chicago area where I currently reside. I have two sisters and two brothers and am the youngest of the bunch. My parents have been deceased for 10 years. I am married for 27 years and have two adult children. I received my MSW in 1997 from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois.

When I found Bowen Theory I was in my early 40’s and was ready to cutoff from my family. I was full of anger and blame. As I began working with a Bowen Family Systems Coach I began to see things differently. I like to use the analogy of putting on a new pair of glasses, with Bowen lenses. With these glasses I can see my relationships differently and I can see the part I play in these relationships. However, seeing is only the beginning. Once I began to observe myself and my relationships I had the opportunity to learn how to respond differently. Only then did I begin to feel and behave differently.

This practice is and will continue to be a lifelong effort. Bowen Family Systems Theory is a way of thinking and living, not a tool or technique. It takes hard work and dedication to becoming the best part of oneself and bringing that best self to all relationships and systems.

I invite you to begin your journey.
